Sheku Bayoh's family call for justice four years after his death in police custody

Sheku Bayoh ’s family demanded a public inquiry yesterday on the fourth anniversary of his death in police custody .

Gas engineer Sheku, 31, died in May 2015 after being restrained by up to nine officers in the street near his Kirkcaldy home.

Despite the family’s calls for answers or justice, no one has been held accountable for his death.

Sheku’s partner Collette Bell and his family called on Lord Advocate to launch a public inquiry.

Sheku’s sister Kadijatu Johnson said: “We are tired of waiting, tired of not being allowed to disclose what happened to our brother.

“I cannot believe that after four years, the Lord Advocate still cannot decide whether to
prosecute or not.”

The Bayoh family’s solicitor Aamer Anwar accused the Lord Advocate of failing to uphold justice.

He added: “The Lord Advocate has been unable to give a satisfactory answer to Sheku’s family on why his investigation has taken four years.

“The family are tired of the delays, excuses and deceit. The dead cannot cry out for justice but Sheku’s loved ones will for him.

“A public inquiry is likely to be the only way to expose the inhumane and degrading treatment of Sheku that led to his death.”

A Crown Office spokesman said: “This has been a complex investigation and COPFS appreciates that it has been a difficult time for all those involved.

“Officials from COPFS have maintained contact with the legal representative of the family of Sheku Bayoh over the status of the case.

“The Crown is committed to ensuring that the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Bayoh are fully aired in an appropriate legal forum.

“In order to protect any potential proceedings and to preserve the rights of the family, the Crown will not comment further at this stage.”
