The body of Kuwait's late Emir Sheikh Sabah, who died after medical treatment in US, arrives in Kuwait City, Kuwait. (Reuters)

Late Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah was laid to rest on Wednesday.

He was buried at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery with new ruler Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah leading the mourners.

Funeral prayers for the late emir were performed at the Bilal bin Rabah mosque.

The prayers were limited to close relatives and Gulf officials.

Sheikh Sabah passed away on Tuesday at age 91. The emir had been in hospital in the United States since July following surgery for an unspecified condition in Kuwait that same month.
