Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan al Qasimi, 39-year-old fashion designer, dies in London

A famous fashion designer, and the son of an UAE ruler, has died in London.

Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi died on Monday.

The 39-year-old, who also went by the name Khalid Qasimi, is the son of the ruler of the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

The sheikh was a founder of fashion label Qasimi.

There are to be three days of official mourning in Sharjah, where his father Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi has ruled since 1972.

Flags have been ordered to fly at half mast.

A statement from the brand, posted on Instagram, said that: "Khalid was praised for his tenacious yet sensitive exploration of social-political issues, particularly those pertaining to the Middle east and its sometimes strained relationship with the West, a subject very close to his heart and upbringing.

"The design world has lost a great philosopher and artist".

A statement from the the UAE's Ministry of Presidential Affairs said: "President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan mourns with grief and sorrow, the death of Sheikh Khalid Bin Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the son of the Ruler of Sharjah, praying to Allah the Almighty to rest his soul in peace, and grant his family patience and solace."

Details of his repatriation and funeral prayers have not been announced.

No further details are known about his death.

Fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco posted a photo of him on Instagram alongside the caption: "Will always be my angel".

The British ambassador to the UAE, Patrick Moody, said the UK sent its "deepest condolences" to the sheikh's family.

According to the website for his fashion brand, Al Qasimi moved to the UK aged nine. 

He studied at Central Saint Martins and his clothes were showcased worldwide.
