Sheffield Wednesday want Sunderland defender, according to reports

Former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is keen to bring Adam Matthews to Sheffield Wednesday this summer, according to reports.

The Black Cats full back's contract runs out this summer, and he has struggled to win his place back since returning from injury.

Football Insider report that Owls' boss Bruce has been monitoring the Welsh full-back's situation and is ready to make a move when he becomes a free agent this summer.

Matthews' Sunderland career has been a difficult one, with the former Celtic defender initially failing to make an impact following a £2m move from Glasgow in 2015.

He spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Bristol City, but was a regular under both Simon Grayson and then Chris Coleman as the Black Cats suffered a second successive relegation last season.

This term, he has featured 28 times under Jack Ross, but has only made nine appearances in 2019.

However, aged just 27, his availability this summer has alerted a number of clubs, with Wednesday reportedly keen to beat others to his signature.
