Sheffield Wednesday suffer major blow ahead of Nottingham Forest meeting at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a major blow ahead of their game with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

Influential midfielder Barry Bannan hobbled off during Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to play-off chasing Aston Villa at Hillsborough and looks a major doubt for the visit of Martin O’Neill’s Reds.

Bannan pulled up 17 minutes from time against his former club and will undergo a scan to determine the extent of his hamstring problem, though he’s almost certainly out of the Forest clash.

“Not the result we wanted today sometimes it just don’t go your way thanks for your support and concern over my injury,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I don’t know how bad the injury is I will find out Monday when I have a scan.”

Wednesday, who suffered their first defeat under Steve Bruce to dent their hopes of challenging for a play-off place, also lost Dominic Iorfa to injury before Bannan’s departure.

That has left Bruce frustrated with the state of the injury problems at Wednesday, who will likely have to reshuffle their pack in a game that both sides need to win if they're too reignite faint hopes of a top six finish.

"It is disappointing for us because we all know his qualities,” Bruce said of the Scot’s display.

“He was excellent (against Villa) and was arguably the best player on the pitch.

'We are at the stage where we have to gamble' admits Nottingham Forest boss Martin O'Neill

“It’s been the biggest pain since I came in, the injuries, and we’ve had two more today.

“Dom (Iorfa) has a thigh injury and Baz (Bannan) has a hamstring so I can’t see them being fit for Tuesday but we’ll see.

“It’s a big frustration but it is what it is and it’s just another blow from a day that just didn’t belong to us.”
