Sheffield Wednesday striker and boyhood Newcastle fan Michael Smith reveals dream FA Cup draw

Boyhood Newcastle United fan and Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith has admitted that a trip to St.James' Park with the Owls would be his dream scenario ahead of the FA Cup third round draw.

The League One outfit progressed to the third round via a 2-1 home win over League Two Mansfield, with the ex-Rotherham forward netting twice from the bench to secure progression for the Hillsborough club.

Round three of the competition is where Premier League and Championship clubs join the fray with Newcastle and Wednesday set to learn their FA Cup opponents this evening.

The draw is set to be made from Anfield, home of holders Liverpool, at 7pm and Smith has opened up on his dream of playing in front of the Newcastle faithful.

“I’d like Newcastle away but I’ll take any Premier League club away," the Wednesday striker said. "I’ve never managed to get there [St.James' Park] as a player – plenty of times as a Newcastle fan. It would be lovely to before I retire.

"The Cup magic is still there for me. I remember watching it as a kid with my dad, finals at the old Wembley and at Cardiff, the Wallsend-born 31-year-old added, who came through the famous local Boys Club that produced talents such as Magpies record goalscorer Alan Shearer and Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick.

“It was a rite of passage, coming from where I’m from [being part of the Boys Club]. I never had a trial at Newcastle, but I’m not bitter or anything!"

Newcastle will be ball number 27 whilst Sheffield Wednesday will be number 60 as 32 matches are to be set up.
