Sheffield Wednesday set to beat Bristol City and Nottingham Forest to Crystal Palace striker - report

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly won the race for Connor Wickham.

The Daily Mail reports that the Owls are set to secure the loan signing of the Crystal Palace striker, beating both Bristol City and Nottingham Forest to his signature.

City are keen to strengthen their attack this month and had previously identified Wickham as one of their targets, but there was a lot of competition for the 26-year-old.

The striker is looking to revitalise his career after a string of injuries saw him struggle for regular football, with his time at Palace being hampered by an 18-month long absence due to a cruciate injury.

He now looks set to return to Hillsborough for a third loan stint at Wednesday, having previously played for the club on loan from Sunderland in 2013 and 2014.

Wickham has returned to first-team football with Palace recently, being given a handful of appearances over the festive period.

Yet the Eagles signed Cenk Tosun on loan from Everton, meaning Roy Hodgson is happy to let Wickham leave and get regular starts in the Championship.

He is the second striker the Robins have missed out on in this window, with Rhian Brewster already moving from Liverpool to Swansea City.
