Sheffield Wednesday report Newcastle United over Steve Bruce as clock ticks on new manager search

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that they have reported Newcastle United to the Premier League over the appointment of Steve Bruce as manager.

Bruce controversially quit Hillsborough to take over at Newcastle last week, leaving the Owls with a little over two weeks to find a new manager ahead of the start of the new season.

Wednesday had been optimistic ahead of the new campaign after ending last season strongly under Bruce's leadership.

Yet his tenure came to an end a little over five months after it started as he resigned from his post at Hillsborough to replace Rafa Benitez at St James's Park.

It is news that could impact Bristol City , with the Robins keen on Owls striker Lucas Joao, but any move is most likely dependent on who Wednesday appoint as manager.

In a club statement, the Owls confirmed that they have reported Newcastle over their conduct.

It said: "Following Newcastle United’s announcement on 17 July 2019 of its appointment of former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, the Club confirms that it has today reported Newcastle United’s conduct to the Premier League.

"As the Premier League will now initiate and carry out investigations into the Club’s allegations, the Club will not be commenting further on this matter whilst such investigations are ongoing."
