Sheffield Wednesday players fuming at not being paid in full amid relegation battle

Sheffield Wednesday's woes are mounting after it emerged their players are fuming at not been paid in full.

The Owls prop up the Championship and are seven points from safety.

There is growing unrest among players who were not paid in full in November at the end of the month.

Mirror Sport understands the Owls’ squad only received a small percentage of their regular salaries.

The row and simmering resentment in the dressing room appears to be affecting performances on the pitch after eight games without a win.

Their squad have been paid late previously but have never been hit in the pocket so hard until now.

The timing is extra frustrating for players ahead of a busy Christmas fixture list, fuelling further moans.

It is a nightmare for new boss Tony Pulis who succeeded Garry Monk last month.

Experienced Pulis, 62, has never been relegated before.

But the club has a raft of off-field issues after being docked six points for breaching EFL profit and sustainability rules.

They return to action on Saturday at home to promoted Coventry where Pulis is looking for his first win.

A 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night was their fourth successive loss.

Boss Pulis is now planning a meeting with Thai owner Dejphon Chansiri to discuss the club’s long-standing problems after just two home wins in 2020.

Pulis said: “As a manager who’s been around for a long period of time, I’m going to give him a real honest assessment.

“I said that to the chairman from the very start. There’ll be no sugarcoating, there will be no pussy-footing around.

"I’ve been in the game a long time, I’ve seen clubs in this situation and I’ve seen what it takes for clubs to get out of this situation and it’s a task, it’s a difficult job.

“He’s spent a hell of a lot of money on the football club over the past five years and I understand his frustrations on the squad of players that he’s been left with.”

The Mirror has approached Sheffield Wednesday for comment.
