Sheffield Wednesday owner says Steve Bruce only got the Newcastle United job because of him

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri claims his decision to give Steve Bruce a job - despite not liking his style of football - is the reason he became Newcastle United boss.

Chansiri, speaking to the press for the first time, covered a host of topics regarding The Owls including Bruce's move from South Yorkshire to Tyneside last summer.

Bruce had been out of work for four months before persuading Chansiri to appoint him as Owls manager in January 2019 and, following a decent start in which he lost only three games of the 18 he took charge of, he resigned to replace Rafa Benitez at United.

Asked about Bruce, Chansiri explained: "He wanted to come. I told him ‘I don’t like your style’, you can’t finish my job.

"He said he was good enough. I gave him the chance.

"If he hadn’t come to see me then he wouldn’t have the chance to come here.

"He went to Newcastle because of us.

"If he didn’t come to Wednesday then he wouldn’t have gone to Newcastle, and because he came to see me, that’s why he got the job!

"That’s a fact and he cannot say anything to that. You can ask him."
