Sheffield Wednesday may follow Derby in exploiting EFL loophole Andrea Radrizzani is rallying against

Sheffield Wednesday could follow Derby County’s lead and exploit a loophole that would help them get around EFL financial fair play regulations, it has been reported.

The Sheffield Star have reported that Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri has purchased their stadium in order to skirt around the profitability and sustainability regulations.

The move would be confirmed when the club publishes their accounts in the coming weeks and while controversial, would not contravene any rules.

Derby chairman Mel Morris did it with Pride Park and came under heavy criticism, but it looks to have served as inspiration for Chansiri with Wednesday’s ground Hillsborough.

Morris had worked with Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani in order to try leverage a better broadcasting deal from the Football League, but their relationship has since been extremely frosty after the shady dealings came to light.

Radrizzani has criticised Morris on a number of occasions in recent weeks, most recently stating that exploiting the loophole is a more severe form of cheating than sending a scout to watch opposition training.

Like Derby, Sheffield Wednesday are in danger of falling foul of the recently-introduced profitability and sustainability regulations, which stipulates that clubs cannot exceed losses of more than £39m over a rolling three-year period.

Points deductions and transfer embargoes are two potential consequences for clubs that break the rules.
