Sheffield Wednesday legend Lee Bullen emerges as favourite for Ayr United job

Lee Bullen has emerged as favourite to become Ayr United's new head coach.

The Ayrshire Post understands The Honest Men are now in negotiations to land Bullen, who currently leads the Sheffield Wednesday Under-23s team.

His work with the Hillsborough youth talent has caught the attention of Ayr's new managing director, Graeme Mathie, who wants him to spearhead the revolution at Somerset Park.

Ayr are now set to enter talks with the Wednesday hierarchy aimed at tempting Bullen north to replace the sacked Jim Duffy.

And the Ayrshire Post understands Bullen is keen to make the move across the border and become United's new head coach.

Bullen, 50, achieved legendary status with the Owls after captaining the side to promotion from League One in 2005.

He returned as a coach in 2011 and has held the head coaching position on an interim basis for the South Yorkshire club.
