Sheffield Wednesday confirm Everton talks over Lewis Gibson transfer decision

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has confirmed the club are in talks with Everton concerning Lewis Gibson returning to Hillsborough.

Gibson spent half a season on loan at Fleetwood Town in 2020 and was one of the division’s stand-out defenders during that spell before joining Wednesday last summer.

At the time, he had offers from eight clubs, including in the Championship and in Holland’s Eredivisie, but felt joining up with Moore’s Owls side was the right move for him.

But Gibson has only managed to play just 45 minutes of League One action for Wednesday after picking up a muscular injury against Bolton Wanderers in October.

Speaking just last month, Moore revealed the Owels were weighing up the possibility of terminating Gibson's loan deal.

He said: "We are still in discussions now with Everton. It is possible; we are looking at the loan and if there is a possibility to extend it or is there a possibility that we both come to an agreement and end the loan.

"Both clubs are talking at the moment and both clubs will make a professional decision on it."

And even though Gibson is back at Everton for treatment, Moore has revealed that more talks have since been held between both clubs as the young defender is making 'tremendous strides' toward a return to full fitness.

“We have been chatting to Everton and he has been making some wonderful progress,” the Wednesday boss said via Yorkshire Live.

“He’s doing really, really well. He will be back in the early part of January and will be ready to go. We are still in discussions with him, but he has made some tremendous strides.

“With that injury, we were probably looking more towards February so he is making wonderful progression at the moment.”
