Sheffield Wednesday boss gives update on Nottingham Forest clash amid coronavirus concerns

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk says he is preparing as if Saturday’s clash with Nottingham Forest is going ahead.

There has been some doubt surrounding the Championship match at Hillsborough, after Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis contracted coronavirus.

The Greek was at the City Ground on Friday night to watch the 3-0 home defeat to Millwall, and came into contact with Forest players and staff - all of who have since tested negative for COVID-19.

However, “a number” of Arsenal players went into self-isolation after meeting Marinakis at the end of their Europa League game against Olympiacos - the Greek club which he also owns.

And Millwall have said senior club representatives who came into contact with him have self-isolated, “as per government advice”.

It has also been reported football matches in England could be ordered to be played behind closed doors, in response to the outbreak.

But Monk says the weekend’s game between Forest and the Owls is currently set to take place as planned.

“I think we are aware of all the things this week and we are governed by the authorities,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“As things stand the game is on until we are told otherwise. We are preparing as normal for the game until told otherwise.

“It’s all down to the authorities how they handle the situation from now.

"Of course you want to play football in front of your fans but the decisions will be made by the powers that be and we will follow that.”
