Sheffield United's Rhian Brewster gives his verdict on Swansea City's move for Southampton's Michael Obafemi

Swansea City are closing in on the signing of Michael Obafemi.

The Southampton youngster is seen by Swans boss Steve Cooper as the man who could propel them back into the Premier League.

Twenty-year-old Obafemi has struggled for game-time on the south coast, with Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl prefering the likes of Danny Ings, Shane Long and Che Adams in attack.

He has only made two first-team appearances this term, with the first coming in the Carabao Cup against Brentford and the most recent in a 1-0 top-flight win over Burnley in September.

At his age, the Republic of Ireland starlet needs to be playing.

Obafemi fits the profile for Cooper, and is very much the type of striker the manager enjoys working with.

The situation is similar to this time last season, when Cooper brought in Rhian Brewster on loan from Liverpool. His signing paid off in a big way, with the former Chelsea youngster banging in 11 goals in 22 appearances for his temporary side, lifting them into the play-offs in the process.

That form earned him a £23.5million move to Sheffield United last summer, and although the transfer has yet to work for Brewster with the Blades struggling, he is fondly remembered in SA1 for his contribution to the Swans' cause.

And Brewster has seemingly given the move for Obafemi his seal of approval, liking a social media post reporting the rumour.

An out-and-out striker is the final piece needed in Swansea's jigsaw as they aim for automatic promotion this season. The currently sit second in the Championship table, and a player who could provide the impetus that Brewster did could be the difference for Cooper.

Andre Ayew has been their talisman, Jamal Lowe has hit red-hot form but a traditional number nine is still needed, with Brighton loan man Viktor Gyokeres not quite hitting the ground running in Landore.

If Obafemi's signature is sealed and if he makes half the impact Brewster did, Cooper and the Swans faithful would be very happy.
