Sheffield United prepare final bid for Swansea City's Oli McBurnie as back-up sees Aston Villa and West Brom enter equation - reports

Sheffield United will make a their final bid to prise Oli McBurnie away from Swansea City this week.

That's according to The Sun , who report that the Blades will turn to Brentford's Neal Maupay if their attempt fails - triggering a three-way battle with Aston Villa and West Brom for his services.

Chris Wilder is a longtime admirer of McBurnie and wants the Scotland international to help spearhead United's attack as they return to the Premier League.

But Swansea are holding out for £20million, with the Blades valuing him closer to the £15million mark.

As such they could turn to the Bees' star man Maupay but will face stiff competition from Villa and the Baggies.

Swansea chairman Trevor Birch said this week that the club is under no pressure to sell their big-name stars this summer. Daniel James has moved to Manchester United, while high earners Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Jefferson Montero and Borja Baston are more than likely to be shifted on.

"We will try to keep hold of key players, those players who we all know are going to be key," added the chairman.

"That's something I am going to try to achieve. There may be a knockout offer that the club can't refuse - that's the same for any club - but we haven't had that yet.

"Hopefully we can keep what we have intact and then build in the one or two areas where we need to strengthen.

"We don't need to sell (others) if we can't move them (high earners) on, but I am extremely hopeful that we can do that because it would make life a lot easier."

McBurnie got on the scoresheet for Swansea against Crawley on Saturday as Steve Cooper ramped up his side's pre-season preparations.

The former England Under-17 boss said he was happy with the 23-year-old's performance in the 3-2 win.

"Oli was good today, and it was good to see him score, and Nathan (Dyer). Those players who play high up the pitch are there to get into goal scoring positions and take their chances," .

"Oli got great numbers last year and he's very committed to at least reaching that again, and improving on it. We've got to make sure we work hard with him and the rest of the team to make those chances for him.

"I've spoken to all of the players. I really believe in building relationships with the players. Oli loves playing for the club, you can see that. He has a lot of friends, and I go back to the spirit, and he's a big part of that. He's a big character, a very likeable lad and he works very hard in training.

"He's producing as well so I'm sure come August 3, he'll be ready to deliver as he did last year.

"We're close to halfway through pre-season so we feel like we're on course to get to where we want to be, while knowing that we've still got a long way to go in these final three weeks to be season ready."
