Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder reveals Sir Alex Ferguson advice and gives Man Utd form verdict

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has revealed the advice he was given by legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson in his early management days.

As Wilder prepares to face a United side for the first time as a manager, he recalled the days when Ferguson would mentor him.

Wilder's managerial stock is now sky-high, with his Sheffield United side in fifth place in the Premier League — two places higher than United. Wilder achieved two promotions with the Blades, following spells with Halifax, Oxford and Northampton and spoke about Ferguson in his pre-match press conference.

“Sir Alex used to phone me as a young manager," he said.

"He’d take the time out to help me out along the way. He used to do it to quite a few young British managers. I remember a time at Oxford, we had a big game the next day, he got in touch and stuff like that gave me a huge boost."

Wilder was also asked whether United, who have struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for much of this season, have lost their 'fear factor'.

But he dismissed the notion that the Blades were favourites to win when the sides meet on Sunday afternoon, adding: "I still think it's Manchester United, teams go through different periods."

Wilder will be without on-loan for the game this weekend, but backed stand-in Simon Moore to prove an adequate replacement with Henderson ineligible due to Premier League loan rules. The United 'keeper has shone at Bramall Lane, earning an England call-up for his form this season.

“Simon has been fantastic since he’s came into the football club," added Wilder.

"He was massive for us in the League One season. He’s been patient but he’ll be looking forward to Sunday.”
