Sheffield United boss admits concern over Liverpool loan recall in January

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom has admitted that he is concerned about the possibility of Liverpool recalling Ben Davies from his loan spell.

The Reds centre-back is spending the season on loan with the Blades, having yet to make his first appearance for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp signed Davies from Preston North End as emergency cover last winter, but he is yet to make his competitive debut for the Reds.

Since moving to Bramall Lane, Davies has made 14 appearances in the Championship and has been a key player for the Blades.

The rise in Covid-19 cases has led to speculation that Premier League clubs could “stockpile” players to avoid matches being postponed.

This has led to rumours that the likes of Liverpool could recall their players out on loan when the transfer window opens next month.

Sheffield United have Davies from Liverpool and Morgan Gibbs-White on loan from Wolves, and Heckingbottom admits it’s out of his hands if the players get recalled by their parent clubs.

"Yeah of course, but we want to keep them,” Heckingbottom told Examiner Live , when asked if he’s concerned about Davies and co being recalled.

"We think we are a good place for our loan players to come and be in a good group, get game time, push and hopefully climb the league.

"A lot of that is out of our control. They are not our players. We're happy with them, they are happy with the club so hopefully we can keep that going forward.

"It's always about playing. Players want to play. If it's down to the player the players want to play.

"If I'm a young player who has gone out on loan, I've gone out on loan to play games, so if my team is going to bring me back as a back-up just in case I am going to have something to say about that.

"The player's feelings will be considered without a doubt, but we're the club that's got no say on it, that's down to the player and parent club.

"All we can do is create that environment and make sure it's a decision that goes our way."
