Police are investigating after shots were fired at a house in Sheffield, which is reportedly the home of a Labour councillor.

Officers were called to a property on Edgedale Road in the Nether Edge area in the early hours of Tuesday morning, South Yorkshire police said.

The property belongs to Sheffield city councillor Mohammad Maroof, according to reports.

A window was damaged by the shots, the force said in a statement.

Jim Steinke, a fellow Labour ward councillor, told the Guardian he had spoken with Mr Maroof and the police.

Mr Steinke said: “He was obviously shaken up and we are concerned about his safety because he is standing for election and he has a young family. We will be issuing a further statement later today."

A local resident told the Sheffield Star he heard a "bang" shortly after 3am.

"I thought somebody had hit a car it was that loud. I didn't hear any cars pull up so whether they were on foot I don't know," he said.

South Yorkshire police said: "Our officers were called to a property on Edgedale Road in the Nether Edge area of Sheffield in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 23 April) following reports of shots fired.

"Police attended the scene and found damage to a window consistent with shotgun discharge.

"The area was searched but the offenders could not be located.

"Enquiries are ongoing and there is an increased police presence in the area as our officers continue their investigation."

If you have any information which could help the investigation please call 101 quoting incident number 111 of April 23 2019.
