Sheffield man arrested after Wigan Athletic's Nathan Byrne racially abused following Bristol City draw

A man has been arrested after a Wigan player received racist abuse on social media after the 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Wigan Athletic reported a "hate crime" to police on Saturday night after midfielder Nathan Byrne was sent a vile racist message on Twitter having been falsely awarded the Latics' late equaliser against the Robins.

A 20-year-old from Sheffield handed himself in at Blackpool Police Station the same evening and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and malicious communications.

In a statement, Lancashire Police said: "The man has since been released under investigation pending a charging decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)."

Anthony Pilkington scored in the third minute of injury time for Wigan to earn a 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate, however the Press Association incorrectly awarded it to wing-back Byrne with his name then published as the official scorer on a host of websites including the BBC.

Soon after full-time, Byrne screen-shotted and shared a sickening message he had received on Twitter.

Brentford said they "utterly condemn discrimination" after a season-ticket holder was arrested following a claim of abuse directed at Derby midfielder Duane Holmes, while Northampton said several members of their first-team squad were allegedly abused prior to their match at Notts County.

The incidents are in a week which has seen England and former Bristol City defender Danny Rose claim the authorities are not doing enough to combat racism in football.
