Sheffield flooding: Shoppers forced to spend night in Meadowhall

People were left stranded into the night at Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield following torrential downpours in the city.

Shoppers found comfort on benches and chairs in the food court, while others even changed into pyjamas to settle in for the evening.

Last night, police advised anyone still inside the shopping centre to not leave due to surrounding roads being severely flooded.

Motorists trying to leave were being diverted back into the car park for safety.

While some staff and shoppers tried throughout the night to get home in either cars or taxis once police said it was safe to do so, others stayed put.

Luke Turner, who works at one of the restaurants, bedded down in a stockroom where he used 'aprons' as pillows, he told the BBC.

One woman on Twitter said her sister had 'laid in a bed in Debenhams'.

However it wasn't just locals stuck at the shopping mall as a family from Vegas had travelled to Sheffield for the Meadowhall Christmas Light event - which was ultimately cancelled.

The family of five even changed into Primark pyjamas to make light of the situation.

"In for the night all the way from Vegas #meadowhall @LoveMeadowhall family stranded in PJ’s", said Sarina, the twin of one of the women in the photo.

Elsewhere in Rotherham, emergency services worked through the night to move up to 100 people who were also stuck at the Parkgate centre.

High-volume pumps and boat crews had been brought in from elsewhere in the country.

Hundreds of flood warnings are still in place this morning for the north of England, including Manchester.

People are being advised to not travel between Doncaster and Scunthorpe, and Leeds and Doncaster, however trains between Manchester and Sheffield are running again this morning.

In most places around Greater Manchester the rain appears to have stopped around 2am today, but the knock effects are still causing problems today.
