'Sheer madness' of speeders blasted by garda as driver caught doing 185kmh during coronavirus pandemic

A garda has urged motorists to slow down, describing some of the speeds on quieter roads as “sheer madness”.

The warning came after a driver was caught by the Meath Roads Policing Unit travelling at 185km/h on the M3 on Tuesday night.

Meath Crime Prevention Sergeant Dean Kerins felt he had to post an appeal after witnessing a number of incidents of speeding cars narrowly missing pedestrians and cyclists in recent weeks.

He said: “What is it with drivers these days? They think they are on a racing track and the standard of driving I have witnessed over the past few weeks is actually quite scary.

“Some drivers think, because there are less cars on the road, that they can go faster.

“But there are more pedestrians and cyclists on the roads now than ever before because of lockdown and some drivers are showing little regard for their safety.

“It’s sheer madness the lunacy of them. I’ve seen cars overtaking cars who are overtaking pedestrians on the road – that is pure dangerous. Less traffic does not mean a green light to go faster.

“Over the coming weeks, there will be more and more cars back on the road as people return to work but please, slow down.

"We have enough problems to deal with in Meath without dangerous speeding drivers adding to them.”
