Police have launched an investigation after a driver deliberately ran over a group of sheep then set one on fire in a “horrific” act of animal cruelty.
Detectives said the suspect mowed down three of the animals in total. One died at the scene in Surfleet Marsh, near Spalding, Lincolnshire.
Two other sheep, including the one that was set alight, had to be put down.
The farmer who owns the field said eight more of his flock have gone missing.
Investigators believe the eight sheep may have been chased into a nearby River Welland or stolen.
Investigating Wildlife Crime officer PC Martin Green said: “This is a horrific incident that has caused much upset to the farmer.
“Unfortunately, we do believe this was a deliberate act and we are carrying out investigations to bring the offenders to justice.”
Officers probing the incident believe the suspect was travelling in a 4X4 and ran the sheep over sometime between Friday and Saturday last week.
Lincolnshire Police is calling on anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
“We would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist with our investigation,” the force said in a statement.
“Any information no matter how insignificant it may seem, may help us to investigate this cruel act and identify those responsible.”
