Shedd Aquarium reveals names of new penguin chicks

Calista and Carmen are introduced to their exhibit on Aug. 12, 2019. | Shedd Aquarium/Brenna Hernandez

Say hello to Calista and Carmen.

After a week-long naming contest, Shedd Aquarium revealed the names of its newest Magellanic penguin chicks Tuesday.

The chicks’ names were inspired by their natural habitat in the Southern hemisphere — Isla Calista in the Falkland Islands and Carmen, Argentina.

Aquarium members were able to cast votes to choose the new names. Calista and Carmen beat out Rosie and Reina, Sara and Solis and Loma and Lively, which were also based on the penguins’ natural habitat.

The new chicks, both females, were recently introduced into the penguin habitat at the Polar Play Zone, where they can be seen with the rest of the penguin colony. They can be distinguished from the other penguins by their lighter gray feathers.
