Shearer's admiration for Wilson finish as he watches Newcastle win with another Magpies legend

Alan Shearer has praised Callum Wilson after the forward scored the winning goal for Newcastle United against Burnley at St James' Park.

The 29-year-old gave the Magpies the lead with a terrific finish, which earned Eddie Howe's side three vital points.

Newcastle battled well during the first half and took the lead through Wilson, who steered home from a cross, giving Nick Pope little chance.

The former Coventry City man had another glorious opportunity to double the lead in the 55th minute after running on to Miguel Almiron's pass, but his effort was superbly saved.

Nevertheless, former Magpies striker Shearer seemed impressed with Wilson's goal, branding it a 'great finish' on social media.

It was Wilson's sixth goal of the season after he scored against Norwich City in midweek and he has proven to be an astute addition since signing from Bournemouth last summer.

Although Newcastle have had a tricky start to the season, it's safe to say Wilson's goals will be vital if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

He scored 17 times during his first season at the Magpies, but has struggled with a number of injury issues this term and will be hoping to stay fit for the remainder of the campaign.

Shearer tweeted his comment on Wilson while at the game and he has been joined alongside some elite company.

Ex-Newcastle midfield Rob Lee is with Shearer on Tyneside, while their sons - Charlton Athletic midfielder Elliott Lee and Will Shearer - were also at the clash against the Clarets.

The 51-year-old posted an image at half-time, stating: "So good so far!!! Lads & Dads at the Toon today!"

The Magpies went on to hold out to earn their first top-flight win of the season.

They have closed the gap between themselves and 17th-place Watford to just three points ahead of the Hornets' game against Manchester City.
