Shea Patterson, Michigan roll through Maryland, 42-21

ANN ARBOR, Mich. _ For about 20 minutes, Michigan football controlled everything except the scoreboard.

But the Wolverines dominated there too in the second half, and head into perhaps the biggest stretch of their 2018 season on a five-game winning streak.

Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns and the Wolverines outgained visiting Maryland 465-220 during a 42-21 win on Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) will host Wisconsin next Saturday in a showdown at Michigan Stadium.

Michigan tight end Zach Gentry led all receivers with seven receptions for 112 yards while running back Karan Higdon had 25 carries for 103 yards, his third straight 100-yard game and fourth overall this season.

After the start of the game was delayed more than an hour due to lightning in the area, Michigan found itself battling plenty of frustration early. The Wolverines gained 132 yards in the first quarter but only managed a field goal due to a botched fourth-and-short play.

That got worse late in the frame when Maryland's Ty Johnson returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score.

The Wolverines outgained Maryland 132-21 in the quarter, but trailed 7-3.

Things started to pick up from there, though, as Patterson's 51-yard strike to Nico Collins was the highlight of an 11-play, 95-yard touchdown drive _ capped by a Ben Mason 1-yard rush _ that took more than six minutes off the clock.

Michigan got back on the board late in the second quarter when Patterson scrambled out of a pocket before hitting Ronnie Bell in stride for a 22-yard touchdown pass, giving the Wolverines a 10-point edge _ despite a 291-42 yardage edge _ at the break.

Quinn Nordin added his second field goal of the game on the Wolverines' opening possession of the third quarter, before Donovan Peoples-Jones ran back to the football on another Patterson scramble and hauled in a 34-yard catch and run for a touchdown to make it 27-7 Wolverines with 2:15 to go in the quarter.

Maryland's most productive drive of the afternoon, a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown march, got the Terrapins within 27-14 with 11:28 to play.

But Michigan stormed right back, rattling off a 9-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Patterson to fullback Jared Wangler. The Wolverines went up 35-14, as Mason rushed in a two-point conversion with 6:37 left in the game.

Cornerback Brandon Watson sealed the win minutes later, taking an interception 46 yards for a touchdown.

Michigan played Saturday's game without starting junior defensive end Rashan Gary (shoulder) and lost junior defensive tackle Michael Dwumfour to what appeared to be a serious right foot injury in the second quarter. Defensive tackle Carlo Kemp also limped off the field late in the game. Offensively, junior running back Chris Evans missed his third straight game with a leg strain.
