'Just do it if it makes you happy':104-year-old Archibald Prize entrant's life advice

Eileen Kramer (centre) encouraged others to try creating a self portrait.

A 104-year-old Sydney woman who hates the word "elderly" has entered one of the nation's biggest art prizes, determined to show age is no barrier to creativity.

"O-L-D. Take it out of the dictionary," Eileen Kramer said.

"But I have been around for a long time."

The Sydney choreographer and dancer still performs on stage.

She was even the subject of an Archibald Prize entry in 2017.

But submitting a self portrait was a very different endeavour — and one she urged others to try.

"None of us are Picasso or Matisse or Brecht or any of those people," she said. "Just do it if it makes you feel happy."

Kramer visited the Art Gallery of NSW this week to submit her painting.

She admitted it was unlikely to win, but said she was hopeful it might be hung.

"It's just a little old painting," she said.

"I don't expect anything. But it's very exciting at the same time."

The packing room, in the heart of the building, was bustling as hundreds of paintings were delivered ahead of entries closing on Friday.

And yet, for a moment, workers paused to pose for photographs with the amateur artist who has lived for longer than the competition's 98-year history.

Chief packer Brett Cuthbertson was among those who praised Kramer's attitude.

"She's still got a lust for life and she's having a go," he said.

"She wasn't a painter. She was a dancer.

"Now she's taking up painting seriously at 104. [It's] Unbelievable."

Mr Cuthbertson said he had never seen an entrant like Kramer during his involvement with the competition, which spanned more than 30 years.

"She's incredible," he said.

"Have a crack. That's the good thing about the Archies. Anyone can have a go."

As for Kramer's secret to a long and fulfilling life?

"I think I've been a good girl," she said, laughing.

"And I'm creative. Everybody is creative. Creativity is built into us."
