A 103-year-old American woman who recovered from Covid-19 marked her return to health by popping open a cold beer.
“Feisty old grandmother” Jennie Stejna, of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, contracted coronavirus earlier this month, but has since made a full recovery.
Her family shared a video of the “hardcore” baseball fan, who lives in an old age home, drinking her favourite brew, a Bud Light, to celebrate.
They had thought they were about to lose their beloved relative, and had called to say what they thought would be their last goodbyes.
Ms Stejna, who was born in Poland before moving to the States, had been the first person to contract the virus in her nursing home.
The great-great-grandmother of three is a widow - her husband Teddy died in 1992 at the age of 82 - and she had told relatives she was ready to “go to heaven”.
Ms Stejna’s granddaughter, Shelley Gunn, had brought her own daughter Violet, four, to visit the home just before Ms Stejna fell ill.
She told local media: “'We're truly very thankful.”
Her husband, Adam, added: “This feisty old Polish grandmother of ours officially beat the coronavirus.”
Ms Gunn explained: “She is a hardcore Boston sports fan… She used to sit outside and listen to the Red Sox on the radio.”
Massachusetts has seen nearly 7,000 deaths from the virus.
