Teen comedy She’s All That is currently being given the remake treatment, according to TheWrap.
The new version is being developed by The Weinstein Company and Miramax and will be produced by Spike Lee’s wife Tonya Lewis Lee, who also produced 2013 TV movie The Watsons Go To Birmingham.
The original film, released in 1999, focused on Freddie Prinze Jr’s jock character who makes over geeky Rachael Leigh Cook for a bet only to fall for her, pitting him against Paul Walker’s rival high schooler. It was a sleeper hit, making over $100m worldwide.
The remake will be directed by Kenny Leon, who also directed the recent small screen take on Steel Magnolias which starred Queen Latifah. The news hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by a representative from either The Weinstein Company or Miramax yet multiple sources have shared the information.
Freddie Prinze Jr has already responded to the news on Twitter after a user asked him about the remake. The actor simply said: “tough for writers with original scripts”.
The original supporting cast also included Usher, Matthew Lillard and Kieran Culkin. It arrived in the middle of a resurgence in interest in the teen movie genre with other hits including 10 Things I Hate About You and American Pie.
