‘She hasn’t made a penny’: Husband at a loss for what to do after wife falls for MLM scam but won’t admit it

MLM schemes are notorious for pretty much being a massive con. While recruiters may sweet talk people with promises of “being your own boss,” or “working your own hours,” it usually ends up with the sorry individual that got roped into it either not making money, or in many cases, outright losing it.

One man had to have a difficult conversation with his wife after she tried making money from an MLM for nine months. The concerned husband took to Reddit to ask for help after his spouse became hyper-fixated on her work, locking herself in her office and avoiding housework or interactions with her husband, while at the same time losing money despite working 6-7 hours a day.

The husband claims that he is currently the sole money-earner in the house as his wife’s job simply doesn’t support them financially. He also says his wife accused him of not being supportive of her to which he claims he has been, “but it’s very difficult after 9 months with literally negative profit.” He admits that he would prefer her to have no job at all rather than being pretty much unavailable all day and still having nothing to show for it.

Redditors share their thoughts

Of course, you can always rely on the people of Reddit to offer some sound advice. “Wait is she into an MLM?” Asked one individual, “you need to get her the f— out if she is.” Plenty seconded the sentiment. Meanwhile others assured the husband that he wasn’t being selfish for getting frustrated with his wife and her job, “Nine months with zero income and neglecting family duties is a valid reason to be frustrated.”

With the reassurance of the people of Reddit that he wasn’t being a jerk, the husband decided to confront his wife about the issue, returning to provide an update on how their conversation went.

He claims they “had a long fight, then talk,” but he thinks she’s seen the light now. After their discussion she decided she would use her insurance license to look for a real opportunity. She also admitted that “she didn’t see a future here but felt like she couldn’t just give up and admit defeat.” That’s what’s known as the “sunken costs fallacy,” it can be hard to quit on something when you’ve dedicated so much time and effort towards it.

On the bright side, the past nine months have apparently grown her confidence, and the husband has promised to help her find another outlet. Hopefully she can apply what she’s learned from her time in the MLM to her next job.
