She died alone, trapped by a fire in the house she spent her entire life... she may have no surviving relatives

Police are trying to trace relatives of a woman who died when fire broke out at her home.

Patricia Wilde, 86, was trapped inside the property in in Burnage.

She had lived there all her life, according to neighbours.

Ms Wilde died despite two United Utilities workers running inside to try to save her.

Andrew Fitton and Kevin Stocking wrapped their t-shirts around their faces and ran bare-chested into the terraced house in St Margaret's Avenue on Thursday last week.

They were beaten back by thick, black smoke.

Tragically, firefighters later found Ms Wilde dead in her living room. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

An investigation into the fire was launched. Police and fire chiefs have not released any information relating to the cause of the blaze.

It is thought Ms Wilde was housebound and had mobility issues.

The fire is believed to have been burning for some time before it was reported at around 7am.

Police are unsure whether Ms Wilde has any surviving relatives.

Andrew, and Kevin, told the Manchester Evening News they were driving to a job on nearby Burnage Lane when they saw smoke pouring out of the house and a woman, thought to have been the victim’s carer, stood on the pavement.

They ran in through the open door, but said the ‘pitch black toxic smoke’ was just too thick.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service borough commander Mark Threader praised the UU workers’ bravery.

He said: “We believe they have entered the premises but were beaten back by the smoke. It was a fantastic effort."

Mr Threader said a joint fire and police investigation into the cause of the blaze has been launched, but at this stage there is ‘no suggestion foul play was involved’.

At the moment it’s not clear where or how the fire started, but the flames were contained within the living room.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "Patricia Wilde , 86, passed away at home on St Margaret’s Avenue, Burnage on 15 August 2019.

"There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death."

Anyone with information about Ms Wilde's next of kin is asked to contact the police coroner's office on 0161 856 3897.
