Philippe Decouflé is best known for his bouncy-costumed New Order videos and the spectacular opening ceremony he created for the Albertville Winter Olympics. His concoctions are as elaborately extravagant as modern dance gets.
But Decouflé is more than just a postmodern Busby Berkeley. With his own company, DCA, he creates alluring dreamscapes, which play fantastical games with the human form. His latest flight of fancy, Shazam!, sees him draw back from the costume-led menagerie of his last outing, Decodex. It would have been tough to top that for mind-blowing mutations so Decouflé has cleverly changed tack, turning to the world of optical illusion, ranging from reassuring old-tech (mirrors) to the latest hi-tech video techniques.
Mixing live dance and interactive video with film sequences, Decouflé plays games with perspective and illusion. Two dancers become four, then four become eight, but how many are real? The effect is so dazzling it scarcely matters. Shazam! delivers images of hypnotic beauty, a Gallic sense of humour and a fine array of swimwear.
