Shayne Lavery called up to Northern Ireland senior squad for Luxembourg and Germany games

Shayne Lavery has been drafted into the Northern Ireland senior squad for the upcoming games against Luxembourg and Germany.

The Linfield striker was initially included in Ian Baraclough's Under 21s but has now been promoted to Michael O'Neill's panel.

Lavery comes in for Wycombe Wanderers forward Paul Smyth who has been ruled out of both games after picking up a foot injury.

Former Everton striker Lavery had been expected to be named in O'Neill's squad on Wednesday but was a surprise omission.

The 20-year-old scored twice in Linfield's Europa League win over Qarabag last week, and was on target again in last night's second leg in Baku.

O'Neill had said earlier in the week that Lavery could get called up to his squad ahead of next Thursday's friendly against Luxembourg, and the crunch Euro 2020 qualifier against Germany four days later.

Lavery has one senior cap for Northern Ireland to date, coming against Panama during last year’s Central America tour.
