Shay Logan racist abuse condemned by SFA chief as Ian Maxwell hits out at 'unacceptable and ridiculous' hatred

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell has condemned the hatred as Scottish football reels from reports of racist behaviour.

Alfredo Morelos has been backed by Steven Gerrard after revealing he has been a target for racist abuse “on and off the pitch” during his time at Rangers.

Aberdeen’s Shay Logan became the latest to hit out after suffering racist abuse from a Rangers fan following the 0-0 draw between the sides at the weekend.

A 15-year-old later issued a grovelling apology after being publicly shamed by the Dons defender for a vile online post.

Maxwell said: “It’s a hate crime, it’s a big deal. It’s absolutely unacceptable and ridiculous that in 2020 we’re having conversations about racist abuse at matches.

“It’s something we all need to work together to eradicate. There’s no place for it in any walk of society, not just football.

“It’s fundamentally wrong. It’s hard to get your head around why we’re still talking about it now and we need to work with the clubs, other partners and the government because it doesn’t only happen in football stadia.

“What you see in football stadia is 60,000 people, which is effectively a small town coming together every Saturday, and things that happen in a town happen in a stadium environment.

“It is a mirror of the society we live in, but it’s ridiculous we’re still talking about it.

“We’re not complacent - clubs do a huge amount of work in preparation for games from a security perspective.”
