Shawn Mendes is said to have summoned Camila Cabello for a chat where the pair decided to end their two year relationship.
The 23-year-old Canadian pop hunk and the 24-year-old Cuban-American pop beauty shocked fans this week when they announced their romance was all over.
Fans are used to seeing Shawn and Camila engaging in very public displays of affection – with marathon snogging sessions being uploaded to social media, and the former Fifth Harmony star also featuring in Shawn’s Netflix documentary last year where they smooched and spent time together in front of cameras.
But the passion has died out and the couple have decided to be just friends after the spark fizzled out between them.
According to E! News, Shawn "initiated the conversation" with Camila about ending the relationship – while the source goes on to say Camila has been left: “very upset over the split.”
The source claims: “The relationship was getting stale and complacent, and they decided they are better off being friends.
“It was really hard for a few days but she has been spending a lot of time with friends and keeping busy. She has a huge support system and is feeling renewed now..”
The source went on to claim that Camila and Shawn are “still in communication and want to be friends,” and that it: “was not a bad breakup at all.”
On Wednesday, Shawn and Camila announced the end of their romance via Instagram – with both suddenly sharing a break-up announcement.
The statement declared: “Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.
"We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends."
The duo added: "We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward" – with the message also containing a number of red heart emojis.
Shawn and Camila first began their romance in 2019 – with many questioning the validity of their relationship due to the extreme social media content of themselves kissing.
However, Shawn hit back when a paparazzi photographer asked: “some people say that it’s a publicity stunt, and you say?"
The pop star curtly replied at the time: “We’re definitely not a publicity stunt.”
Shawn and Camila collaborated during their romance – producing the chart topping single Señorita – and had previously worked on a song called I Know What You Did Last Summer back in 2015.
While Camila was Shawn’s first high profile romance, Camila previously dated British dating coach Matt Hussey between 2018 and 2019.
Since her split from Shawn, Camilla has posted a “big fat dump” via Instagram with a collection of photos showing she has been seeking solace with friends, drinking wine, and has been reading the late Maya Angelou’s autobiography; “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”
Fans have supported the star sending messages of support, love and red hear emojis in response to her collection of photos.
