Shawn Mendes fans 'so proud' as he tells Scots gig it's his first performance without medication

Shawn Mendes' Scots fans were full of love and support after the singer revealed at his gig in the Hydro, Glasgow , that he is performing for the first time without anti-anxiety drugs .

The singer, 20, was performing to thousands of revellers at the SSE Hydro tonight during the Scottish leg of his new tour.

Canadian Mendes made the admission while sitting behind a piano, beneath a giant yellow rose, just before launching into his track A Little Too Much.

In a clip of the concert shared on Twitter he said: "I think its very important to say out loud. It's very hard to talk about, so give me a second to breathe.

"As a performer, when getting on stage you can get very nervous and you freak out. Sometimes things become a lot.

"There's medicine and things to do to help and I meditate. There's also this medicine called beta blockers.

"It slows your heart rate so you can calm down. I want you guys to know that every show for the past year I've been taking this medicine to slow my heart rate so I can be calm on stage.

"And I think it's important for you guys to know that this is my very first show without that medicine. I love you guys so much and appreciate you so much."

Beta blockers are prescription-only medication that work by decreasing the activity of the heart by stopping the action of hormones like adrenaline.

They can be used to treat a wide range of illnesses, from anxiety and glaucoma to heart failure and high blood pressure.

Fans of the Stitches star were quick to show their support for the heartthrob and gushed about how proud of him they are.

User @starrycitynight said: "I'm in tears!! I‘m so so so proud of him. He‘s so brave and kind, you can literally hear how emotional he is which just makes him even more relatable and genuine. He truly deserves the whole world."

And @biareputation wrote: "I wish he’d know how proud we are of him for putting himself out there every day and for making us a part of his journey.

"I didn’t think that I could love the person he is more but I guess that I was wrong and I literally have no words."

@middleofmyworld commented: "I’m actually crying. Shawn we are so proud of you and thank you for everything you doing for us."

Shawn shot to fame in 2013 singing covers of famous records on the six second video sharing platform Vine, which has since shut down.

Since then, he has gone on to release three albums, numerous hits - including Treat You Better - and work with global superstars such as Khalid and producer Zedd.

People using beta blockers should always check with their GP or specialist doctor before coming off the medication.
