Shawlands nail salon creates Billy Connolly, Irn Bru and Tunnocks Teacakes false nails

A Shawlands nail artist is keeping up the southside's reputation for creativity by creating false nails adorned with Glasgow celebrities.

As reported by our sister paper the Daily Record, Mariko O'neill, who runs Sakura Nails in Shawlands, posted a picture of her nail designs which include portraits of the Big Yin, the Irn Bru adverts and even a homage to Tunnocks Tea Cakes.

She has a whole set of falsies painted with the cast of Trainspotting - the artwork was inspired by the iconic poster from the film and also features stars Kelly MacDonald, Ewen Bremner and Johnny Lee Miller.

Mariko, who moved to Scotland from Japan seven years ago, creates the designs using high quality Japanese gel products before posting them on social media.

Tunnock Tea Cakes fans were bowled over by some of her recent artwork which included the Tunnock's logo and even an image of their long time mascot the Tunnock's Boy, and the firm shared the post on their social media.

Unable to work during the current lockdown, Mariko explained that she has been keeping busy by polishing up on her artwork and connecting with her followers on social media. She said: "I started getting positive reactions on my Instagram, so I just wanted to keep on painting something cool and making people surprised with my fun nail art."

Focusing on intricate portraits, Mariko manages to fit in a massive amount of detail on such a small surface. Her other works include The Addam's Family, The Shining and impressionist art.

Speaking about where the idea for the Trainspotting artwork came from, Mariko added: "I have been obsessed with painting portraits on artificial nail tips since last summer, and decided on a Trainspotting themed set this time because this is one of the great iconic films on 90s culture which I really love.

"I also hope my clients and Instagram followers will enjoy these memories. Even though my salon is closed because of the lockdown, their response definitely help motivate me to create more exciting nail art."
