Shawhead Primary pupils were invited by Iain and Liz Mitchell of Irongray Community Council to attend tree planting in Shawhead Park.
Iain, the chairman of the community council, told the pupils they were planting trees for the Queen’s jubilee.
The Queen wanted everyone to plant a tree for her jubilee celebrations instead of getting presents. Trees are beautiful and good for climate change.
Iain and Liz were planting a type of rowan with white berries which the birds don’t eat at first.
They are good in this area because they are very strong and can withstand windy weather.
These rowans have colour all year. Legend says they are meant to ward off evil spirits.
The pupils enjoyed going down to the park to watch the people plant trees.
Some of them enjoyed it more than others because the volunteers brought two cute dogs, which were very friendly.
The school is planning to plant a tree and pupils took inspiration from the community council volunteers.
They hope that everyone will plant a tree for the Queens 70th year on the throne.
The pupils are delighted that they are helping with the green canopy.
