‘Shawberto Carlos’ - Manchester United fans react to Luke Shaw’s England goal that sparked thrilling comeback

Luke Shaw has been hailed by Manchester United fans for scoring England’s first goal in their 3-3 Nations League draw with Germany on Monday evening.

His low strike that squeezed over the line past Andre ter Stegen was his first for the Three Lions since the final of Euro 2020. He played the full 90 minutes in his first start in any game since United’s 4-0 loss to Brentford last month.

He has struggled for minutes since being replaced by Tyrell Malacia at half-time in that match, enjoying only 20 minutes against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League since. He came on for the last 18 minutes in England ’s 1-0 loss to Italy on Friday but played a whole game for the first time since United’s opening day 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

He enjoyed an encouraging outing for his country. After a tentative first-half before failing to close down Kai Havertz for Germany’s second of the night, Shaw looked revived after his strike on 71 minutes.

He found himself deep in the opposition box for the goal and advanced forward more frequently amid the comeback, which saw the hosts come back from two goals down to initially lead 3-2. One criticism aimed at Shaw under Ten Hag is that the full-back struggles to work the flank as much as his manager would like.

But United fans on Twitter were encouraged by his showing against Germany.

@ScottishScott4: Shawberto Carlos back again.

@Thompso50916139: Well deserved.

@TommyRedGun: Shaw low key coming back to form. Good to see!

@UtdLuis00: Finally, he's getting back to his best.
