Shaun Wright-Phillips puts the Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard debate to bed

Frank Lampard was an "amazing player" but Steven Gerrard had "something different" and was the better of the two.

That's according to Shaun Wright-Phillips, who crossed paths with both players in the England set-up and at Chelsea with Lampard.

Gerrard and Lampard are widely regarded as two of the best midfielders England has ever produced, with both men winning the Champions League with Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

Trying to separate them, unsurprisingly, has always sparked passionate debate.

But while Wright-Phillips admits Lampard was very special, the 38-year-old reckons Gerrard was the "perfect number 8" and slightly better than his contemporary.

"I think for me I would have to say Steven Gerrard," Wright-Phillips exclusively told AmericanGambler.com.

"That's no disrespect to Lamps, because everyone knows that Lamps was an amazing player. It was so hard to put your finger on with Gerrard, but it just seems like he had something different.

"Four-four-two was a big formation at that time for me, until Jose Mourinho came around and started playing a four-two-three-one, and Gerrard was your perfect number 8 in a four-four-two.

"He did everything. You just always knew that something was going to happen defensively or in attack, and his talent and technique were unreal."
