Shaun Wright-Phillips opens up about Nottingham Forest rejection and unexpected reunion

Shaun Wright-Phillips began his youth career at Nottingham Forest before being released at the age of 17.

In an open conversation his father, Ian Wright and his son, D'Margio, who plays for Stoke under-23s - the 39-year-old reminisced about his Forest rejection, claiming he was simply told he was "not good enough".

"When I was at Forest, I was doing a paper round to get up there, and then went for the last trial," he began, in the film made for Barclays Football as part of Black History Month.

"They said they were happy and on the way back, they just turned around after saying they were going to give me the contract, on the train down, they turned around and said, 'sorry we have kind of changed our mind, you're basically too small and not good enough'."

Wright-Phillips then joined Manchester City at 18 and had an unexpected reunion with Steve Wigley.

Wigley, who had been part of the Forest academy set-up, was a member of the first-team coaching staff at City under Reds legend Stuart Pearce.

"A few years later, obviously the manager's changed at City - it was Steve Wigley (who was on Pearce's coaching staff)," he added.

"He was part of the Hart syndicate at Forest that released me, so all through training Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman, would run past him and be like 'bet you're devastated now, right?'

"There is always to me a time that comes back around and your football does all the talking."

Wright-Phillips went on to also play for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, New York Red Bulls and Phoenix Rising Sun.

He also won 36 senior caps for England, scoring six goals.
