Shaun Wright-Phillips defends Pep Guardiola's Man City rotation strategy

Shaun Wright-Phillips has urged Manchester City's supporters not to worry about the club's relative struggles in the Premier League.

Defending top-flight champions City are second in the table but their chances of securing a third title in a row are virtually non-existent, with first-placed Liverpool leading the Blues by 22 points.

Liverpool have taken 73 points from a possible 75 so far this season and Wright-Phillips believes it is the Anfield club's incredible record that is making City look a poorer side than they are.

“I wouldn’t be worried so much about their (City's) form,” Wright-Phillips told Sky Sports. "I think they’re doing well. I just think that the problem they have is Liverpool are doing so well that they’re not even dropping any points - they’re just winning.

“If you go back to seasons, like when you had ‘the Invincibles’ - they would drop points to a draw, whereas Liverpool are taking those draws and turning those into wins, which is making it even tougher to catch them.”

Wright-Phillips also rejected the idea that City's struggles are partly down to Pep Guardiola constantly tinkering with his team. Guardiola is yet to name the same team in successive games this season.

"I think for every player it's tough, but with the team and the standard of player that he has, he has to rotate to keep people happy," Wright-Phillips added.

"It is a tough one. Normally it's never been a problem, so it's interesting to hear that it is now."
