Shaun Maloney lays out 'impossible' Celtic situation as former Parkhead star looks beyond Peter Lawwell era

Concerned Shaun Maloney insists it's "impossible" to say what the future of Celtic will look like without a clear-cut structure in place.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell announced last week he is set to retire this summer after 17 years at the helm with Scottish Rugby chief Dominic McKay named as his successor.

Manager Neil Lennon is under pressure with fans calling for a January review into his position to be made be public.

However, ex-Celtic star Maloney believes it's hard to judge what next season will look like as he underlined the myriad uncertainties at his old club.

The Belgium national team coach believes the appointment of a technical director could be introduced with massive reform on the horizon after the Premiership title disaster this season.

When asked about the size of the job facing McKay on BBC Sportscene, Maloney said: "It's really difficult to say.

"I kind of feel like there is going to be structural change. And maybe the new CEO coming in, it might not be down to him to make every decision.

"They might bring in a technical director which alleviates the pressure from him.

"Until that structure is actually in place then it's impossible to make these decisions.

"Now, just from the teams point of view I think they just need to close that gap between Rangers as much as possible and obviously fight for the Scottish Cup if that does go ahead."
