Artist Shaun Gladwell works across painting and photography, but is best known for his video installations, often depicting choreographed performances with skateboards or BMX riding. One of Australia’s most highly acclaimed artists, Gladwell represented the country at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
His dual-channel video installation was debuted in New South Wales in 2012. Now West Australian art fans will get to experience it. Gladwell has captured the body in motion against site-specific backdrops on film before. This installation sees a beat-boxer perform vocal percussions in a studio opposite a dancer who freestyles in a graffiti–marked environment.
The two performances took place at different time, but have been synchronised by Gladwell, so they appear to work hand-in hand, with the sound motion in one video generating the movement in the other.
