Shaun Edwards' future takes new twist as English Premiership giants confirm they've spoken with him

English Premiership giants Wasps have confirmed they want to bring Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards into their set-up.

Wasps rugby director David Young says somebody of Edwards' coaching calibre would be a "fantastic" statement for the club.

Former Wales skipper Young said he had already spoken to Edwards and will be talking to him further when he returns from a holiday.

Edwards, who spent 10 years with Wasps, agreed a deal in August 2018 to return to Wigan Warriors as head coach from 2020.

But his future was thrown up in the air when he said he would be unemployed after Wales' tilt at the World Cup, despite supposedly agreeing the Wigan deal.

Confirming Wasps are ready to swoop, Young is quoted as saying on RugbyPass: "We have spoken to him and made our interest known in someone who is a big part of the club’s history, but I know we are one of a number of options he has.

“I do not know where we stand and we will be talking to him when he is back from holiday.

"Certainly somebody like Shaun would be a fantastic statement for the club and it would be a fantastic addition to the coaching team.

"Whether that will happen or not I don't know is the honest answer. But if it's not Shaun, we would still be in the market to looking to improve what we've got.

"We've made no secret of it we want to improve our coaching group. What I mean by that is we've only got three. We've always looked for at least an extra coach, maybe two.

"A real quality, experienced guy that can add to the group.

"Any coaches available we've been talking to. There's been lots of speculation about Shaun. He is someone who would interest us, but I think he did his job advert didn't he? Put himself out there."

Edwards himself said after Wales' Grand Slam: "The only team I’m not going to go to is Wales, because the new coach is going in a different direction.

“So as it stands, come the end of the World Cup I’m unemployed. That’s where I am.”

A "disappointed" incoming Wales coach Wayne Pivac denies ignoring Edwards , saying his agreement to join Wigan prevented any discussions progressing.

Wigan Warriors revealed on Friday that Edwards has asked for more time to consider his options. You can read the club's full statement here.
