Shaun Bailey quits after claiming his family cancelled Xmas plans despite lockdown party

Disgraced Shaun Bailey quit his London Assembly role following revelations of his "raucous" lockdown breaching party last Christmas.

The former London mayoral candidate handed in his resignation as chair of the London Assembly's police and crime committee after he was approached by The Mirror about the party.

A statement from the assembly's Conservative group said: “He does not want an unauthorised social gathering involving some former members of the London mayoral campaign team last December to distract from the committee’s important work holding the mayor of London to account.”

Images revealed by The Mirror shows 24 people crowded together within a medium sized room in the Tory party's Westminster headquarters.

Mr Bailey organised the party which took place on December 14, last year when London was in Tier 2.

Tory staff dressed up, one pictured in a sparkly evening dress, another in a House of Commons Christmas jumper, and posed for the event.

Six days after hosting his party, Mr Bailey claimed to understand people's lockdown frustrations.

On December 20 last year, he tweeted: "Tier 4 is tough on every Londoner.

"My family has had to cancel plans and I’m sure yours has too.

"It’s also tough on the businesses that have had to close yet again. I’ll be doing what I can to secure more support for London’s businesses and help them through this difficult time."

And months beforehand in June 2020, when Met Police broke up parties in Brixton, South London, Mr Bailey said on Twitter : "The recent scenes in Brixton worried me.

"I'm worried that people think the law doesn't apply to them. Worried that the Mayor will support the police when it suits him but not when it doesn't."

Mr Bailey's resignation would throw more spotlight on the Met Police.

The Met Police have so far refused to investigate any of the reported Christmas parties held in Downing Street.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said the force will not be investigating reports of the Downing Street party held on December 18 and added she had received no complaints over it.
