Sharp will sell you an 8K TV — but you probably can’t afford it

Japanese tech company has designed an 85-inch monitor with a resolution of 7680x4320 ()

Most people haven’t even got 4K yet. But its successor is already here — in 8K.

The Japanese tech company Sharp has designed an 85-inch monitor with a resolution of 7680x4320. Falling under the catchy name ‘Full Ultra-HD’ the monitor was originally proposed at the Consumers Electronics Show 2012, and will be available for businesses to buy on October 31st in Japan.

It might not be time to ditch the 4K quite yet though, the only footage available to display in 8K is test footage shot on cameras that are yet to go on sale. Sharp are aiming the screen at businesses that will be able to make use of 16 times the resolution of the industry standard 1080p.

The monitor does come with a TV Tuner built-in, but 8K broadcasts are not planned to begin until 2018 at the earliest.

Anyone that does feel the need to buy the panel when it goes on sale will be able to watch the first YouTube clip filmed at ‘4320p’, Ghost Towns:
