Sharp restarts TV assembly

Japan's Sharp Corporation has resumed TV production in Thailand after a 10-year hiatus in a bid to boost sales of home appliances in Southeast Asia and India.

Sharp said an LED TV production line at its plant in Nakhon Pathom province, west of Bangkok, will cater to domestic demand for TV sets and also exports to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and India.

Sharp plans to double annual production capacity at the Thai factory from 500,000 units to 1 million next year.

Sharp has been restructuring its operations under Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, better known by trade name Foxconn, following its takeover.

Sharp's Thai plant halted TV output about 10 years ago when the group decided to integrate its regional production in Malaysia.

Sharp Thai Co, the local sales arm, expects sales of 6 billion baht in the business year to March 2018, up 25%, with TV sales making up half the total. NNA/Kyodo
