Sharon Stone seeks to soothe savage beast

• In a pious twist on the notion of biting the hand that feeds, Sharon Stone and her husband say they want to adopt the 10-foot Komodo dragon that mauled Mr Stone's foot. Just days after the incident at LA Zoo (see earlier story), the Daily Record cites Stone's hubby, San Francisco Chronicle executive editor Phil Bronstein, as saying: "Sharon and I want to adopt the dragon." Bronstein's tendons were severed in the attack when he took off his shoes and entered the giant lizard's cage during a private visit on Saturday. The afflicted editor will be confined to a wheelchair for four months.

• Ursula Andress has been voted the sexiest Bond girl ever in a magazine poll. Sean Connery's buxom Dr No co-star enthralled readers of Hotdog magazine and pipped Barbara Bach's portrayal of Major Anya Amasova in The Spy Who Loved Me for top spot. Denise Richards came third for her role in The World is Not Enough. Goldfinger emerged as the best Bond film while Jaws scooped top honours as the best villain for his turns in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker

• It's amazing what a good crooner can do for you. Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed she endured the pain of giving birth by listening to Tom Jones records. Ananova reports that the Welsh actress told her singing compatriate: "When Dylan was born we were listening to your music." Meanwhile Mr Showbiz says director John McTiernan has left Smoke and Mirrors, the period drama that is set to star Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas. A source said McTiernan was leaving due to "insurmountable business differences."

• Bryan Singer's X-Men has landed six gongs at the annual sci-fi, horror and fantasy Saturn Awards. The movie's haul included best science fiction film, best director and best actor for Hugh Jackman. New Line's Final Destination won best horror film with young star Devon Sawa named best young actor, says the Hollywood Reporter, while Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won best action/thriller.

• Writer/director George Miller has finally taken Mad Max 4 into production, according to reports. Although the identity of the leads is still a closely guarded secret, the Melbourne Herald Sun says Mel Gibson is unlikely to star, but may assume a producer role. Heath Ledger, who appeared with Gibson in The Patriot, is rumoured to be on the cast list. The production is understood to be shooting in Morocco and will also use some South Australian sites.
