Sharon Stone pays tribute to Seamus Mallon in Belfast following his death

Hollywood movie star and model Sharon Stone today signed a book of condolence in honour of Seamus Mallon at Belfast City Hall.

The international star wrote a simple tribute to the SDLP stalwart and Good Friday Agreement architect.

It said simply: "With respect and admiration."

The actor was in Belfast with Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams, the co-founder of the Peace People.

The women have been working closely with each other to help refugees escape civil wars and poverty.

Stone, 61, who calls Betty her 'second mum', says their friendship has changed her life.

She said: "When my dear second mother Betty Williams, called upon me for help to build [a refugee] camp, I had no idea what it would be like to meet refugees, to hear their stories, to hold their children; now I am forever changed."

Mr Mallon, from Markethill, Co Armagh, died on Friday aged 83 and has been remembered for his strength of character and his central role in building the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Mr Mallon was the original Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, sharing power with Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble following the Good Friday Agreement.

A former deputy leader of the SDLP, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of power-sharing government.

And US President Bill Clinton described him as "a hero of the peace process and a profoundly good man".

John Alderdice said: "In the terrible times he stood for decency and democracy. When a new path looked possible he was there to put his shoulder to the wheel and build a new, shared and peaceful Ireland. One of the best of the boys from the Co Armagh."
